Q. What is Swedish Massage?

Modern Swedish massage techniques evolved from a system developed by a Swedish physiologist called Peter Henrik Ling.

The main aim of Swedish massage is to increase the flow of Oxygen in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It stimulates the Skin and nervous system and is both relaxing and invigorating. Swedish Massage uses five main techniques effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotment (percussion) and vibration.

Q. What will happen during a treatment?

On your first visit you will have a free consultation which consists of a number of questions about your general health, injuries and mediacl conditions. It is important to remeber to write down any medication you are on. This is important to determine if there are any contra indications (physical cnditions) that would prevent the treatment taking place.

The client will be asked to underess down to there underwear and to lie under a sheet on the massage couch. During the session a towel will be used to expose only the parts to which treatment is being applied. Please note I have a strict policy on the wearing of underwear on the lower part of the body.

Oil will then be applied to the client and the treatment will begin.

Q. Should Massage Hurt?

I have had many clients comment on overseas massages where they were pummled, they seem to think that this is what makes a good massage. "No pain, no gain" however holds no truth in massage. Massage should not be painfull, it is not a mark of a good therapist to use brute force on your muscles. Many people request a really deep massage. It is the responsibility of the massage therapist to explain to the client that there is a fine line between tissue damage and deep pressure massage. While a deep pressure massage can make you sore, it should NOT cause tissue damage.

Q. What is Ear Candling?

What are ear candles?

The candles are hollow tubes made out of linen or cotton. The fabric is stiffened and when it is sprayed or dipped with beeswax. They are hollow and have a small filter towards the bottom which prevents any liquid wax or candle residue from entering the ear.

How do ear candles work?

Due to the shape of the candle being a hollow tube it creates a chimney effect when lit. The mild suction and the heat of the released vapours circulating inside the ear gently massage the eardrum and help soften any compacted ear wax. The change of temperature leads to a change in pressure which aids in clearing any congestion. The gentle heat also promotes blood and lymph circulation.

What happens during a treatment?

You will lie on a couch with your head on one side, and the therapist will place the lighted candle carefully in the ear. The therapist will then place their hands gently around the base of the candle, protecting your head. There is no risk of burning. The candle is extinguished before it reaches the therapist hand, the process is then repeated on the other ear.
